How it all started
From a young age, I’ve always had a natural curiosity about how things work and the mechanics behind them. I spent countless hours dismantling and reassembling items, eager to understand their inner workings. This hands-on approach shaped my early passion for problem-solving and craftsmanship.

My first little workshop

As I grew older, my skills expanded beyond simple tinkering. I began creating functional pieces for specific purposes, primarily focusing on woodworking. Over time, I honed my craft, learning to work with various materials and tools to bring ideas to life. My journey took a more technical turn when I passed my driving test and started working on my car. I teamed up with a close friend who shared the same enthusiasm for automobiles, and together we developed a strong foundation in metalworking and mechanical repairs.
With a growing interest in building and fixing, I transformed my parents’ garden shed into a small workshop. It was there that I continued to sharpen my skills, dedicating time to projects both big and small. My passion for problem-solving became so ingrained that I always kept a fully stocked tool chest in the back of my car, prepared for any repair or project that came my way.
My professional journey took a significant leap forward when I joined a factory maintenance team, where I was exposed to a diverse range of hands-on experiences. During my time there, I developed expertise in fabrication, equipment repairs, and preventative maintenance, all of which expanded my technical knowledge and skill set. With these newly acquired abilities, I began undertaking a variety of projects, from small, custom creations such as shelves, bird tables, and key racks, to larger, more complex builds including sheds, wooden and steel workbenches, tool racks, and trolleys. No project was too small or too large—if something needed repairing or building, I was always ready to take it on, applying my attention to detail and craftsmanship to each task.
Alongside personal projects, I became the go-to person for family and friends, helping with household repairs, furniture restoration, and even outdoor fixes like fence repairs and tap installations. Their encouragement to turn my passion into a business didn’t go unnoticed, and after careful consideration, I took the leap.
In late 2023, I officially launched Hookie’s Handy Works, a business that reflects my lifelong passion for craftsmanship, repairs, and problem-solving. What started as a hobby has evolved into a professional service dedicated to helping others with quality, reliable handiwork.

Alex Hook “Hookie”
Who is Hookie?
“Hookie” is a nickname that’s been with me since school, based on my last name, Hook. It stuck with me over the years, and now, it’s a part of my identity. That’s why I chose it for my business name—Hookie’s Handy Works. It’s personal, it’s familiar, and it reminds me of the community I’ve been a part of for so long.
